Two people walk into a beauty school. They take the classes and spend a year exploring the curriculum until they get their degree. One of them says it’s worth it and that they don’t regret a thing. The other one disagrees and says that they wouldn’t go back there again. Obviously, you want to go to makeup school, so what do you do?

The truth is that makeup school CAN be worth it, but it depends on your individual needs and drive. If you love makeup and you’re willing to put in the effort, makeup school will be one of the best things you do. If you’re going to beauty school as a last resort and you don’t really have the passion for you, you’re probably not going to get much out of it.


Is makeup school worth the price?

Makeup school costs anywhere from $3,000 to $5,000, so it might not be worth it if you can’t afford it or if you’re going to go into debt to go. There’s a lot of FREE information out there. Take Youtube and Google, for example. There’s even a ton of beauty books that could show you the ropes. Not only does beauty school cost money, but it also takes time. Therefore, you should only go to beauty school if you’re TRULY dedicated to makeup. It will make the learning process a whole lot easier.

If you’re not sure that you really want to do makeup, you might not want to make the investment. You could use the money for something less expensive, such as books, to perhaps test if it is right for you.


Is the curriculum worth it?

Arguably, you could learn a lot of the information at home or with books, but this DOESN’T mean that it’s not worth it. If you’re looking up stuff online, you may not be sure where to start and makeup school can be a great guiding light.

Furthermore, beauty school will also push you farther as you learn from other students. Friendly competition and a desire to learn will lead you to be a better makeup artist.

Of course, there is only so much that makeup school can teach you. There are always new trends that no traditional or online school can foresee. If you’re out on your own, being able to self-teach is a valuable skill to have.

Makeup school does not work like a tradition 4-year bachelor’s degree. Programs can range from anywhere to 8 months to 2 years, depending on if you are a full or part-time student. The time and effort that you will have to put in with also vary depending on the intensity and complexity of the program.

Makeup school with not only teach how to do makeup, but a lot of schools will actually teach you how to make money in your profession. Personally, I think that this is one of the most valuable things that you can learn. Knowing this will allow you to do what you love for a living, which is pretty amazing if you ask me.

If you already know a lot about makeup then makeup school might not be for you. Of course, there are some things that you WILL learn, but it might not be worth the time and effort. Instead, you might be able to learn a lot from a few 5 minute makeup videos.
